What are the symptoms of flat feet?

If you have flat feet and don’t have symptoms then the good news is that you won’t need treatment. However, common symptoms of flat feet include:

  • Feet that feel tired easily
  • Aching or painful feet, particularly around the arches and heels
  • Swelling of the bottom of the foot
  • Back or leg pain

How do I know that I have flat feet?

There is a simple experiment that you can easily perform right now to find out whether you have flat feet or not. Soak your feet under water and then step onto a flat, even surface. Step away and check out your footprints. If there is a full footprint left behind then you have flat feet. Of course, just because you have flat feet doesn’t mean that you will necessarily require treatment unless you start to experience foot pain and other symptoms.

How can I improve symptoms of flat feet?

How you treat your symptoms will depend on the severity of the issue. Common conservative treatment options include:

  • Icing the feet whenever you experience pain or swelling
  • Performing stretching exercises daily
  • Wearing braces, orthotics or specialty shoes that provides cushioning and support for your feet, particularly around the arches
  • Getting physical therapy
  • Taking pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications
  • Getting steroid injections for severe inflammation
